저자소개
1935년 미국 콜로라도 주 라준타에서 태어났다. 오리건 대학에 진학하여 저널리즘을 공부하면서 연극 클럽 회원 및 레슬링 선수로 활약했다. 그 뒤 스탠퍼드 대학에 들어가 창작에 대해 공부하는 한편, 환각제 LSD, 각성제 코카인 등 향정신성 약물효과를 실험하는 프로그램에 참여하는가 하면 정신병원에서 야간 보조원으로 일하기도 했다. 이 과정에서 종종 환자들과 대화를 나누었으며, 직접 실험에 참여해 환각제의 효과를 경험했다. 이때의 경험을 바탕으로 『뻐꾸기 둥지 위로 날아간 새』를 집필, 이듬해인 1962년에 발표해 폭발적인 반응을 얻었다. 1950년대 비트 세대와 1960년대 히피 세대를 연결하는 작가인 그는, 이 책에서 억압된 자유와 강요된 삶에서 벗어나 새로운 가치를 추구하는 인물들을 그려 냄으로써 새로운 사고 방식, 가치 체계를 추구했던 1960년대의 혁명적 변화를 예견했다는 평가를 받았다. 『뻐꾸기 둥지 위로 날아간 새』는 1963년 브로드웨이 무대에서 상연되었고, 1975년에는 영화화되어 작품상, 감독상 등 아카데미 시상식 다섯 개 부문에서 상을 탔다. 이 외에 『때로는 위대한 관념』, 『키지의 벼룩시장』, 『악마의 상자』, 『선원의 노래』등을 발표했다. 2001년 간 종양제거 수술을 받았지만 끝내 회복하지 못하고, 그해 11월 세상을 떠났다.
